About Oculi

News. A word that gets taken for granted these days. News, as presented by the mass media, is rarely new, highly censored, and has poor coverage of events of local interest. The news of today has become less about reporting events and more about entertainment - filmed after-the-fact, scripted, produced, and filtered.

This is not what we want in the news. We want our news to employ free speech, covering everyone's point of view, and covering real events as they occur! If you're like us, and you're sick of the "Old News," then Oculi is for you!

So What Exactly Is Oculi?

Oculi is the world's first peer-to-peer news network - a web-based community that allows people to be other people's "eyes". It's from that concept, in fact, that we derived the name. The word "oculi" (eyes) is the name given to representations in prehistoric artwork of the all-seeing eyes of a greater being - a protector, perhaps. We hope that Oculi can become the realization of that, allowing us to inform and protect each other with an all-seeing p2p network of eyes.

How Does Oculi Work?

Oculi leverages the power of mobile smart devices, such as the Open Handset Alliance's upcoming "open phone," to allow normal people like us to become news broadcasters. Whenever we see an important event happening, we can just pull out our phone, start Oculi, and instantly, we're broadcasting live video news to the rest of the world!

Not only does Oculi empower us to become broadcasters of important news, but it improves on the "Old News" regime by adding technology that doesn't exist in the mass media today, like the MapCast geo-stream system, the Mobilert p2p alert system, and more!

So What is MapCast All About?

News is all about who, what, where. Streaming video covers the who and the what. But it's missing the key "where" part! That's how we decided to create MapCast technology. "MapCasting" allows Oculi users to broadcast video and location data simultaneously, which pinpoints video streams on a map as they're being broadcasted!

Furthermore, the MapCast technology allows web users to search for news in a whole new way! Instead of browsing through categories and subcategories, they can simply zoom into an area on a map and find the top-rated broadcasts in that region.

Even beyond that, MapCast allows people to find different points of view of a singular event by presenting

And What's Mobilert?

What if you could know the future...

  • What if you could avoid accidents and speed traps before driving into them?
  • What if you could evade dangerous criminal activity in your immediate vicinity because you knew exactly where it was happening?
  • What if you could know what clubs have the best events going on before paying the cover?

We always thought it would be great for a P2P system like Oculi to include a helpful hint mechanism – one that delivers alerts and information across a network to people who want to receive it. So we invented Mobilert - a technology that allows users to post events of interest to the Oculi Mobilert network, and other users with Mobilert configured will receive notifications when they are within range.
