Anti-china Protest Overshadows Asian Games
After hosting the 2008 Beijing Games and the recently concluded Shanghai World Expo, China hopes to continue its success with the Asian Games in Guangzhou, but the persisting China-Japan row has left athletes and officials with more to worry about than just medals.
Anti-Japanese demonstrations in China over the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea have attracted thousands, becoming violent at times and prompting the Japanese government to warn its athletes to ‘‘behave’’ during the Nov 12-27 event.
‘‘Some locals have anti-Japanese sentiments. The ground rule is to refrain from saying things that may be interpreted as provocative,’’ said Fumihiro Kawakami, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry, who called on Japanese citizens traveling to Guangzhou to act with care at all times.
